Opening Reception: Quizás Mañana, Michelle Angela Ortiz

  • El Corazon Cultural Center 2600 North 5th Street Philadelphia, PA, 19133 United States (map)

In her first solo exhibition at Taller Puertorriqueño, Michelle Angela Ortiz’s presents Quizás Mañana, a show that looks at the power of familial connection, place, and story. This exhibition will feature new installations, light boxes, and portraits representing her focus on what she calls “visual artifacts.”

The title of the exhibit is a reference to the phrase “Quizás Mañana Nuestro Llanto Queda Atras” from the song “Amor Adios” a song that her father used to sing.  It is a ballad of longing and a wish that the person returns to a better time without suffering. Each work will tell a part of a layered story, one that resounds in Ortiz’s family and with immigrants coming to the US.

Born and raised in Philadelphia,  Ortiz is a visual artist/ skilled muralist/ community arts educator who uses her art as a vehicle to represent people and communities whose histories are often lost or co-opted. Through painting, printmaking, and community arts practices, she creates a safe space for dialogue around some of the most profound issues affecting individuals and communities alike.
