Transformed by Heat - a pop-up exhibition hosted @ DVAA in Gallery 1 - November 2nd - 4th
Artwork in various media by DVAA members Sandra Koberlein and Gail Scuderi

Transformed by Heat is an exhibition celebrating beeswax and clay, two beautiful earthen materials that are transformed into art through the use of heat. This show is a collaboration of two artists, their passion for creating, and their desire to share these ancient art forms.
Natural materials such as clay, tile, glass, papers, wood and beeswax along with pigments and other various media, have been sculpted, scraped, layered, painted and eventually heated. The transformation by heat is what sets apart encaustic and ceramic and glass materials from other art forms. The resulting luminous surface is what binds these two artists together and what entices the viewer to experience the sensual qualities of these rich and timeless art forms.
When viewing their works, Sandra Koberlein and Gail Scuderi hope the viewer is moved as the light changes throughout the gallery, catching a glimpse of the various media. Perhaps the sunlight will warm the beeswax and transform you into a multi-sensory exploration throughout the gallery space.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Gail Scuderi:
Gail’s interest in pursuing art as a career began with a pottery class in high school. She attended the University of the Arts and received a BFA in ceramics. Gail has continued to work with clay, mostly creating hand built vessels and relief tiles. Gail’s ceramic vessels express organic forms which are finished using primitive firing techniques such as raku, pit firing, and obvara. The most recent series of vessels are part of a larger series of ceramic vases, relief tile and clay and glass mosaics entitled “Nature and Geometry”.
Gail has shown her work extensively in the Philadelphia area as well as in NYC and New Jersey, where she resides. As a teaching artist, Gail has created over 15 large public mosaic murals in various NJ schools, as well as commissioned public and private work.

Sandra Koberlein:
Sandra is an artist and an artist educator. She has over thirty years experience working with others in various creative capacities. Her artwork is primarily abstract and composed of intriguing layers, similar to the layers of her life. Sandra exhibits her work in competitive galleries, art centers, hospitals and universities both locally and nationally. Her work has won numerous awards and is held in private collections. She is a certified K-12 art teacher and encaustic instructor. Sandra conducts workshops at art centers and in her Woodstown, NJ studio. She serves on several non-profit boards, including DVAA, supporting visual and performing arts as well as arts education.
After earning her Associates Degree in Visual Communications from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Sandra earned a BA in Art and a BA in Art Education from Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ. She added a minor degree in Early Italian Renaissance Art History at the Studio Art Center International in Florence, Italy. Most recently, Sandra graduated with her MA in Art Education from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA.
