History Truck 2018 Sunset at Little Berlin

  • Little Berlin 2430 Coral Street Philadelphia, PA, 19125 United States (map)

The History Truck comes full circle, returning to its original homebase of little berlin (in the lot!), for its 2018 closing of WIC Work/Shop, a public history project exploring the crossroads of American political foodways and gender power dynamics.

-- -- --- ------

Please join the Philadelphia Public History Truck for the WIC Work/Shop, an exploration of the memories, experiences, and history of the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children. Established by Congress in 1972 and funded by the USDA, WIC serves pregnant and breastfeeding women, and children 0-5 years of age.

Families on WIC often say the program is helpful. They often share it is awkward, stressful, and time-consuming. Parked at the historical crossroads of American political foodways and gender power dynamics, the History Truck has questions.

To what extent does WIC serve women and babies, and what is missing from the mainstream narrative? How do we increase empathy for families struggling to put food on the table?
