Join co-curators Tessa Haas and Abi Lua for a tour of “Alter”ing American Art. This exhibition poses questions such as: How is a sense of identity developed in the United States? How do notions of self and community contribute to this? Inspired by June Wayne’s series of lithographs dedicated to her immigrant mother, Dorothy, “Alter”ing American Art: A Selection from PAFA’s Linda Lee Alter Collection of Art by Women examines the shifting definition of what it means to be “American.”
Through three sections focusing on the communal, familial, and material world around them, selections from the Linda Lee Alter Collection of Work by Women highlight how artists have expressed, constructed, and found identity. The Linda Lee Alter collection of Art by Women was generously gifted in 2010 to PAFA in the hope of creating an equitable representation of women, not only at PAFA, but also within the broader American Art canon.
