James Oliver Gallery presents:
(S)Extra: Bait & Switches // Works by Heather Raquel Phillips
Opening Reception: Saturday, May 12th // 6-10PM
May 12 - June 16

We are thrilled to present (S)Extra: Bait & Switches, multi media works by Heather Raquel Phillips. Her intimate vignettes showcase queer identities using humor and innuendo, seeking to break the viewer from normative compartmentalization, exploring sexual power and preference. Phillips' open yet euphemistic approach challenges cultural ideas around sexuality, race, gender, power, and shame, zeroing in on complex dualities and inviting us into a world where the power play has shifted.
Join us for the Opening Reception of (S)Extra: Bait and Switches Saturday, May 12th, 6-10pm.

About Heather Raquel Phillips:
Heather Raquel Phillips is a mixed race, multi media artist working in performance, video, text and photography. As a Philadelphia native & resident, she creates her work with a tight knit community of friends to create intimate imagery & visibility for her subjects.

Phillips works with queer subjects to represent and produce autonomy for negated identities, striving not only for the liberation from normative compartmentalization but a refusal of the status quo. Her characterizations assume the form of tropes to walk directly through stereotypes welcoming the viewer into a conversation that questions and exposes race, gender & sexual classifications as an unstable social construct. Her goal is to simultaneously disrupt notions of normalcy and debunk a patriarchal & heteronormative power structure.

Phillips received her BFA from Tyler School of Art and her MFA from University of Pennsylvania where she was the recipient of the prestigious Toby Devon Lewis Fellowship, as well as the Stuart Egnal Scholarship Award. She has recently showed work at Mama Gallery, LA, the Ice Box Project Space and Grizzly Grizzly in Philadelphia and BLAM Gallery In Brooklyn, NY. She is currently lecturing at The University of Pennsylvania.
