This body of Caroline Kuchta's work examines social exchange as an alternative to economic exchange. Born out of an attempt to take her practice out of the studio, the artist came to working with this closed-loop social exchange, wherein she utilized a social scenario to create a conceptual framework and set of strict parameters. Rescripting the conventions of posing for a portrait functioned to redefine the portrait that resulted. This project examines the role of a work of art as a mediation between artist and viewer. In this scenario the physical act of painting shapes the relationship between the two parties, rather than the image itself. The interaction, rather than the figure, becomes the subject of the work.

Caroline Kuchta is a senior studying Fine Art and Urban Studies at Penn, where she concentrates in painting and public and social practice artwork. She can be reached at ckuchta@sas.upenn.edu, or followed on instagram @carolineskuchta
