A play by Clifford Odets
presented by Ignoble Artists
May 1 - May 4, 2019
Four night run - 7:30-10pm May 1-4, 2019
Pilot+Projects and Ignoble Artists is pleased to present: Waiting For Lefty. This is the groundbreaking 1935 play written by Philadelphia native Clifford Odets and originally developed with the Group Theatre in New York City. The play tells a fictional version of the real New York City Taxi Strike that took place between February and April of 1934. The play is primarily set in the union meeting hall as workers in the taxi driver’s union deliberate whether or not to strike. Hesitation causes the workers to wait for Lefty, their elected union representative, to arrive and give a final word on whether to strike.
This meeting is counterbalanced by separate vignettes about fictionalized characters connected to the taxi strike, providing a broader picture of both the significance of the strike to the drivers and the radical impact the strike has on the minds of other workers. Ignoble Artists' performances will place the audience within inches of the action, creating an immersive experience that makes the audience feel as if they were really attending the contentious union meeting.
Our opening night - May 1st - coincides with International Workers' Day, and in commemoration we will have a 20-30 minute open discussion after each performance about the history of the play, the Taxi Drivers' Strike of 1934, and together their significance in the context of the current national and international labor movements. Additionally within the space is an exhibition entitled Data Memories, featuring artworks by LA artist Dan S. Wang and NYC artist Siebren Versteeg.
