Unfolding since 2015 when it was first birthed at the Kelly Writers House, I YOU ME returns to Philadelphia now in Old City for new public performances, beckoning visitors of all types to engage with its pages. A massive, over-stuffed accordion-style artist book that doubles as an installation, this book is both architectural in scale and thumbable at once.

Through I YOU ME, artist and editor Gina DeCagna asks visitors to unpack the interpersonal dynamics between self and other — encouraging visitors, friends and strangers alike, to converse and feel the collaborative energy of the gallery room during staged participation times, while writing and drawing individual and shared expressions using the versatile medium of charcoal. As interconnected, zigzagging pages of the installation occupy the gallery’s space, participants will rework the charcoal — erasing, smudging, redrawing, and rewriting — and enable us to explore public expressions of selves within spheres of multiplicity.

Originally from the New York metro area, Gina DeCagna is a London-based cultural producer, creating interdisciplinary installations inspired by architecture, literature, semiotics, and philosophy to engage with time, space, and consciousness. Through research-driven methodologies and cultural investigations, she creates and curates cross-genre writing, intertextual media, and interdisciplinary publications or exhibitions in and beyond gallery spaces.

DeCagna is pursuing her MFA at Goldsmiths, University of London and is a 2019 Venice Biennale Fellow under the British Council, serving as a representative of both Goldsmiths and the UK. She has shown in solo and group exhibitions in London, New York, Philadelphia, and forthcoming in Venice, Italy. She holds an Honors BA in English, Creative Writing and Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania, where she had founded, edited, and directed a publication and community of over four hundred collaborating artists and writers known as SYMBIOSIS (2012–2016), based at the Kelly Writers House.
